Custom Statuses, Types, Priorities, and Tags
Masters let workspace admins customize the core field options used throughout Varai Sprints — including task and issue statuses, item types, priority levels, and tags. Tailoring these values to your team's actual workflow makes the tool fit your process rather than forcing you to adapt to a fixed set of options.
What are Masters?
Masters are the configurable lookup values that appear in dropdowns across tasks and issues:
| Master type | Where it is used |
|---|---|
| Task statuses | Status field on tasks |
| Issue statuses | Status field on issues |
| Task types | Type field on tasks (Feature, Bug, Chore, etc.) |
| Issue types | Type field on issues |
| Priority levels | Priority field on tasks and issues |
| Tags | Tags field on tasks, issues, epics, etc. |
Accessing Masters settings
- Go to Settings in the left sidebar.
- Click Masters.
Only workspace Admins can add, edit, or delete Master values.
Custom statuses
Default task statuses
Varai Sprints ships with these task statuses: To Do, In Progress, In Review, Blocked, Done, Cancelled.
Adding a custom status
-
Under Task Statuses (or Issue Statuses), click Add Status.
-
Enter a name (e.g., "Awaiting Client Feedback").
-
Choose a color — this color appears as the status badge throughout the app.
-
Choose a category:
- Not Started — like "To Do"
- In Progress — like "In Progress" or "Blocked"
- Completed — like "Done"
- Cancelled — like "Cancelled"
The category determines how the status is counted in progress reports.
-
Click Save.
Editing a status
- Find the status in the list.
- Click Edit.
- Update the name, color, or category.
- Click Save.
Renaming a status changes its display name everywhere — including existing tasks. The underlying data is preserved.
Reordering statuses
Drag statuses using the drag handle (⋮⋮) to change the order they appear in dropdowns. This does not change their meaning or mapping.
Deleting a status
- Click Delete next to the status.
- Choose what to do with items that currently have this status:
- Migrate to another status — all existing items move to a status you choose
- Confirm.
You cannot delete a status that is in active use unless you migrate its items first.
Custom types
Types categorize the nature of a task or issue (Feature, Bug, Improvement, Technical Debt, etc.).
Adding a type
- Under Task Types or Issue Types, click Add Type.
- Enter a name.
- Choose an icon (optional — makes the type visually recognizable on cards).
- Click Save.
Custom priorities
By default, Varai Sprints has four priorities: Low, Medium, High, Critical.
You can rename these or add additional levels if your workflow needs them (e.g., "Blocker" above Critical):
- Under Priorities, click Edit next to a priority to rename it, or Add Priority to create a new level.
- Set a name and a color.
- Click Save.
More than 4–5 priority levels leads to indecision and inconsistency. The standard four (Low / Medium / High / Critical) works for most teams.
Tags
Tags are labels that can be applied to tasks, issues, epics, and test cases for filtering and grouping.
Creating tags
Tags are created on the fly when typing in any Tags field — just type a new tag and press Enter. New tags are saved automatically to the Masters list.
Managing existing tags
- Under Tags, see all tags used in the workspace.
- Click a tag to rename it — the rename applies everywhere the tag is used.
- Click Delete to remove a tag — this removes it from all items it is attached to.
