Collaborating via Task Comments
Comments are the primary way to have conversations about a task without switching to another tool. Use comments to share updates, ask questions, post links, or give feedback — all in the context of the task itself.
Adding a comment
- Open the task.
- Scroll to the Comments section at the bottom of the task detail page.
- Click in the comment box.
- Type your message.
- Click Post Comment (or press Ctrl+Enter on Windows / Cmd+Enter on Mac).
Your comment appears immediately in the comment thread with your name and a timestamp.
Formatting comments
The comment box supports basic rich text formatting:
| Format | How to apply |
|---|---|
| Bold | Wrap text in **double asterisks** or use the toolbar |
| Italic | Wrap text in *single asterisks* |
Code | Wrap text in backticks |
| Code block | Click the code block button in the toolbar |
| Bullet list | Start a line with - or use the list toolbar button |
| Numbered list | Start a line with 1. |
Mentioning team members
To notify a specific person in a comment, type @ followed by their name.
- In the comment box, type
@. - Start typing the person's name — a dropdown appears with matching workspace members.
- Select the person from the dropdown.
- Their name appears highlighted in the comment.
When you post the comment, the mentioned person receives an in-app notification and (if enabled) an email notification.
Use @mentions when you specifically need someone's attention — to answer a question, review something, or take an action. Avoid over-mentioning, as it can create notification noise.
Editing a comment
You can edit your own comments after posting.
- Hover over your comment.
- Click the Edit icon (pencil).
- Make your changes.
- Click Save.
An "edited" marker appears on the comment to indicate it was changed.
Only the comment author can edit their own comments. Workspace Admins can delete any comment but cannot edit another person's comment.
Deleting a comment
- Hover over the comment.
- Click the Delete icon (trash bin).
- Confirm the deletion.
Deleted comments are permanently removed and cannot be recovered.
Comment notifications
You receive in-app (and optionally email) notifications when:
- Someone comments on a task you created
- Someone comments on a task you are assigned to
- Someone @mentions you in a comment
- Someone replies to your comment
To manage your notification preferences, see Managing notifications.
Viewing comment history
Comments are listed in chronological order (oldest first). Scroll down in the Comments section to see all comments. The most recent comment appears at the bottom.
The task's Activity feed (a separate tab on the task detail page) shows a combined history of all changes and comments, giving you a complete audit trail of what happened.
Best practices
- Keep comments focused — one topic per comment is easier to follow than a long wall of text
- Use mentions sparingly — only mention people when you genuinely need their input
- Update the task fields when something changes (status, dates, assignee) — do not just leave a comment saying "I started this"
- Resolve outdated threads — if a question has been answered, a quick "Thanks, resolved!" closes the loop for everyone
